COVID-19 Increases the Risk for Stroke

A UCLA-led study focuses on how and why COVID-19 increases the risk for stroke. While the virus was initially identified by its severe respiratory symptoms, the virus has caused strokes in young people who had no known risk factors.

The study uses 3D-printed ‘blood vessels’ to identify the link between coronavirus and the increased risk for stroke. Scientists made the finding by running fluid infused with a protein much like COVID-19 through the 3D-printed model of the arteries of a patient who had suffered a stroke.
