Capstone Project

The Duke Fuqua General Management Program covers many topics, connecting to the many roles that organizational and team leaders play. A partial list of topics covered in the General Management Program include strategy and strategic management, operations management, people and systems management, managing innovation, financial management, digital transformation and technology management, data analytics and decision making, marketing management and strategy, negotiations, and leadership. Central to these topics is value creation for the organization internally with stakeholders and/or externally with customers and clients.

The capstone project for the General Management Program involves each participant developing a strategic plan for an opportunity related to those covered in the program and applying the plan in their company, division, business function, or product line. Projects should consider and integrate across several dimensions of the topics covered in the program. The capstone should emphasize the impact on key stakeholders and related value creation opportunities. The project is largely self-directed by program participants, though there will be periodic group check-ins with the full cohort and with small peer groups outside of designated faculty teaching sessions. During the last module of the program, participants will present their projects to a small peer group in break-out sessions. Participants in each break-out session will choose one capstone project to be presented to the full cohort on the final day of the program.

The capstone project will unfold in five distinct phases:

  1. Identify the Opportunity: Methodically analyze the chosen area to identify a topic.
  2. Develop a Plan: Design a plan for improvement for the opportunity identified in Phase I.
  3. Stakeholder Communication: Develop effective communication strategies to convey the financial strategy to internal and external stakeholders.
  4. Implementation Roadmap: Create a detailed roadmap to implement the proposed financial strategy, including key milestones, resource allocation, etc.
  5. Continuous Monitoring and Adaptation: Establish a framework to continuously monitor the financial performance and market dynamics.
