The Power of Facebook Friends Over Solar Power

Scientists have been struggling to find a way to get US homeowners to adopt solar power. Online solar power calculators take into account the home’s access to intense sunlight, roof type and its square footage, and current electric bills to give a personalized estimate of energy costs before and after conversions.

While the aim was to appeal to the homeowners by showing them the financial return on the investment of solar installations, a report found that this was ineffective due to an unexpected reason.

UCLA Anderson’s Leila Bengali finds that when it comes to solar energy, U.S. homeowners rely on friends on Facebook and their relationship with solar rather than rational cost-benefits analysis.
