Why is Team Building Important?

Team building’ is defined as the action or process of causing a group of people to work together effectively as a team, especially by means of activities and events designed to increase motivation and promote cooperation.

The importance of team building

The reason for conducting team building exercises or events is to bring team members together and encourage working together towards a common goal. It is the process of creating a team that is cohesively working together. This means each team member must learn to trust every other member and engage with them to collaborate. This also facilitates a high-performance work environment.

Team building can take a group of people that have never worked together and transform them into a team that functions cohesively.

This is achieved by engaging all participants in fun group activities that allow them to work together without the usual pressure of a professional result. This then allows each of them to see the others in a different light than the formal one they are more accustomed with at the office. Fun and motivational group activities allow people to engage in an uninhibited manner, bringing different qualities of their personality to the forefront.

These types of activities unknowingly build team skills like communication, strategy, planning, problem-solving, and more. Team building also allows for egos at the workplace to take a backseat and for bonds and connections between members to be forged. So that when the same team needs to tackle a project at work, they already have many of the required skills. This helps improve the team’s performance exponentially.

Friendly competition increases productivity within teams. A sense of loyalty and responsibility towards the team is developed that allows each member to bond with the rest. This feeling of camaraderie extends itself to work and eventually gets results.

Team building can also increase creative thinking as well as innovative thinking. Depending on the activities presented, some might require unorthodox methods of coming to a solution. This encourages thinking outside the box and creatively arriving at a solution while working together as a team.

Summary

Enjoyable group activities like team building activities, also increase everyone’s comfort level with the rest of the group. A high comfort level means the team will be happy to work together and this increases the quality of input from each person resulting in higher productivity.

Team building is essential to the productivity, longevity, and quality of a team.
