Working With the Millennial Generation

The term “millennials” refers to those born in 1984 or after. Workplaces nowadays have personnel from practically every generation, with an emphasis on hiring greater talent rather than taking age into account. Depending on the firm’s needs, anyone with the necessary abilities and belonging to a specified age group may be capable of performing a specific role. Hence, in this YouTube video from the ‘Team Fearless’ channel, motivational speaker Simon Sinek discusses a few key aspects of dealing with the millennial generation.

Simon begins by remarking that the millennial generation is commonly labeled as inattentive, even when all of their needs are met; the reason for this is explained in four parts later in the video. According to him, four factors contribute to their disorganized behavior: parenting, technology, impatience, and surroundings. Expounding on the first component, parenting, he claims that the source of any stubbornness is mostly due to the way they were raised. He claims that as children, they are not taught about the real world and that when they reach the workforce and confront difficulties, it is difficult for them to cope. This has a detrimental influence on their self-esteem. In terms of technology, he adds that the increased usage of social media has made it easier for people to conceal their difficulties. According to him, using social media and mobile phones releases dopamine, which can lead to addiction and weaken their coping strategy for dealing with stress. Aside from that, it has resulted in their inability to develop deep and lasting connections. He explains his impatience by stating that the world has gotten more sophisticated and fast-paced as a result of digitalization. Except for work happiness and relationship strength, you can have almost anything these days. He believes that the millennial generation has to acquire the patience to minimize their stress levels. Finally, he believes that if their work settings are not ideal, it will harm their mental health. According to Simon, excellent leadership is critical in these instances. Hence, as solutions to all of these issues, he suggests that companies provide a positive environment to not only the millennial generation but to their entire workforce, that the use of devices be minimized, that they be taught the social skills that they are lacking, and that trust be formed. He claims that this will free up space for new ideas and discoveries, as well as relieve a lot of tension in society.

Every generation has its own set of advantages and disadvantages when it comes to working in an organization, which may be readily overcome with minor efforts on the part of society. Simon Sinek of the ‘Team Fearless’ channel discusses the benefits of working with the millennial generation in this YouTube video.
