Smartwatch that Can Monitor Your Metabolism

New Smartwatch Can Monitor Your Metabolism

UCLA engineers have designed a thin adhesive film for a smartwatch that can monitor your metabolism and a powerful health monitoring system. Study leader Sam Emaminejad, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, and his team of UCLA engineers, created a thin, double-sided adhesive film that goes on the underside of a custom-built smartwatch. The system looks for chemical indicators found in sweat to determine the health of the wearer.

Smartwatch to monitor metabolism

Smartwatches can already help keep track of how many steps you’ve taken through the day, your heart rate, and other such details. Working with a tethered smartphone or other devices, someone can use a smartwatch to keep track of those health indicators over a long period of time.

But this new device can do more. It can monitor your body chemistry. It tracks biomarker molecules found in your sweat, such as glucose and lactate, which tell how well your body’s metabolism is working. This system comes with a custom smartwatch and an accompanying app to record data.
