Tracking taxis for data

Taking a City’s Pulse with Moveable Sensors

There’s always a question of how to collect data from cities. That data could be air pollution, weather, traffic patterns, road quality, or something else. A team of MIT researchers analyzed traffic data from nine major cities on three continents, and collected some interesting data. By tracking taxis for data around the cities they also discovered how many taxis it takes to cover a whole city in a day. While it took about 30 taxis to cover half of Manhattan in a day, it took over 1,000 taxis to cover 85 percent of Manhattan in a day.
