A Virus-Hunter Talks about Novel Viruses

Erin J. Staples, a CDC epidemiologist, created a tracking registry that has documented 50 zoonotic infections or novel viruses so far.

While it is not very common for most scientists and researchers to confront tick-borne diseases Erin J. Staples has worked on some relatively new ones. She explains that new virus discoveries usually happen by accident, but there are programs that try to develop surveillance projects and look for acute febrile illness – someone who developed a fever all of a sudden and test for known pathogens. She also says there are other novel viruses infecting people and going undetected.
