MIT Researchers for Space Sustainability

Various space technologies are always being developed around the globe. With those developments come satellites, rockets, cargo ships, and crew vehicles being launched into space. But once these systems have fulfilled their function, they are either programmed to re-enter into the Earth’s atmosphere where they are incinerated or they are directed away from Earth into a graveyard or disposal orbits. Here millions of pieces of space junk are traveling at tens of thousands of miles per hour.

If any of these stray pieces of junk happen to collide with a working satellite or a spaceship, it would spell absolute destruction. So, the World Economic Forum launched the Space Sustainability Rating (SSR) to find a solution to this problem. MIT researchers are co-leading the design of a global Space Sustainability Rating system.
