Safer Method for Sharing Ventilators

MIT Engineers Propose a Safer Method for Sharing Ventilators

With more COVID-19 patients being admitted with breathing difficulties, there has been some debate over the idea of sharing a ventilator between two or more patients. This means that air tubes would be split into multiple branches to reach the patients from one machine. This idea has been opposed by several physicians’ associations since it potentially poses a risk to patients, because it is difficult to ensure that each patient receives the right amount of air.

But researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and MIT engineers propose a safer method which is a new approach to sharing ventilators between patients. They believe it could be used as a last resort to treat COVID-19 patients in acute respiratory distress.
