Does a Perfect Resume Mandate a Potential Candidate?

A resume is, without a doubt, the first step in attracting attention to an applicant. In order to immediately catch the attention of potential employers, you must have an impressive resume. A perfect resume may open doors to great opportunities, but it does not guarantee skill perfection. It is possible that someone who does not have the perfect resume has exactly the right skills to do the job better than anyone else. Keeping this in mind, human resources executive Regina Hartley discusses how, in this TED Talks video on YouTube, the best hire might not have the perfect resume.

BERKELEY EXECUTIVE PROGRAM IN MANAGEMENT

Regina begins the discussion by stating that when it comes to hiring for a role, she believes there are two types of candidates: “The Silver Spoons” and “The Scrappers.” She explains how she believes the silver spoons are those who have advantages and are destined to succeed, while the scrappers are those who must overcome enormous obstacles to reach the same level as the silver spoons. She explains that a resume is more than just a list of jobs; it also tells a story. In her opinion, a series of odd jobs can indicate inconsistency, lack of focus, unpredictability, or a committed struggle against obstacles. Both the silver spoons and the scrappers, on the other hand, deserve to be interviewed. Regina emphasizes that those who have always had all of the advantages, have never had to work for a living, and are destined for success, how will they handle adversity? She argues that rather than declining an interview with a scrapper in exchange for a silver spoon, it is necessary to interview a scrapper because someone who has a lower chance of succeeding makes every effort to give their best when they do. Scrappers, she claims, are always striving to improve themselves in order to reach the level they desire. Furthermore, they have a sense of purpose that prevents them from giving up. Scrappers, she believes, have the ability to maximize adversity while also building stronger and healthier relationships. According to her, scrappers are motivated by a sense of purpose and a desire to deliver the best results possible.

The lack of a perfect resume does not imply that the candidate lacks the necessary skills to do the job well. In order to get the best hires, employers must focus on whether the candidate is truly passionate about the job and has the necessary skills, as discussed in this TED Talks video on YouTube by human resources executive Regina Hartley.
