The Connection Between the Risk of Dementia and Sleep

It’s no secret that sleep has an impact on health. New research from investigators at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital finds that the risk of dementia increased exponentially among participants who were getting less than five hours of sleep when compared to those who were getting seven to eight hours of sleep every night.

To study the connection between sleep and the risk of dementia and death, researchers considered data collected every year since 2011 from older adults participating in the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS). This is a longitudinal study of Medicare beneficiaries who are 65 years and older.
