Building a Team That Wins

Building a team that wins is not just about recruiting the correct set of people with appropriate skills. The secrets of building a team with members who can truly collaborate and win it all go way beyond that. Renowned author and leadership mentor Prakash Iyer, with three decades of experience in the corporate world, divulges the essence of what constitutes a successful team, in his Tedx Talks video.

Employing the example of the traditional festival of Dahi Handi, Iyer shares eight important lessons for building a successful team that wins and for aiding it in accomplishing success, every step of the way. To begin with, he says that for a team to win, it is essential for a leader to ensure that the members are all aligned to one shared goal. Iyer asserts that in order to succeed, there can neither be a dearth of trust among team members nor the lingering fear of failure, each of which will hinder the attainment of the ultimate objective. Further, he says that due regard and acknowledgment of all its members is absolutely crucial for a team to stay united and committed towards a particular cause, over time. It is equally important, Iyer says, to realize that ambition is the key factor that leads a team to success, notwithstanding limitations in terms of resources. For the very same reason, it is also vital that each of the members enjoys the journey towards success as they move along from one step to another.

Iyer concludes by mentioning that the final constituent for building a team that wins is to ensure that they are driven by unflinching conviction and propelled by the fact that they will stop at nothing short of winning. Thus, only when a team goes out there as the best version of themselves, do they actually have a chance to outdo themselves and win it all, in the end.
