Being Respectful Towards Your Coworkers

Workers who feel respected and whose opinions are valued work in a healthy workplace. Given the strain, it is usual to struggle to keep a good attitude toward each individual among problems and demanding work schedules. Being respectful towards your coworkers, regardless of the scenario, has a number of unintended consequences, including the ability to maintain strong interpersonal relationships with them, build proper communication, cooperation, and collaboration, and this also helps you to create a positive working environment. Because of the reasons mentioned in this episode on the TED Business podcast on Apple Podcasts by leadership expert Christine Porath, it is critical to be respectful to your employees.

Christine begins by stating that words have the potential to either pull people up by making them feel valued, appreciated, and heard, or to drag them down by making them feel tiny, insulted, ignored, or excluded. She underlines that there may be times when you are unaware that your comments have offended someone or caused someone to feel violated as a result of your statements. She also states that the definition or the feeling of being disrespected is subjective. Those who experience incivility, in her opinion, have higher chances of not being able to perform to their full potential. Incivility also spoils the environment of the workplace. It affects our emotions, motivation, performance, and the way we treat others. She claims that the primary reason people engage in incivility is because they are stressed and have an outburst. Apart from stress, she feels that those who engage in incivility do so because they are sceptical. She suggests that being truly courteous entails paying attention to the tiny things like smiling, welcoming, and fully listening to others. She feels that replying and critiquing in a courteous manner without dismissing others is possible. Being respectful towards your employees is important not only for motivating others but also for preserving your reputation as a successful and cooperative boss. Being treated with respect is just as vital as being recognized and praised for one’s efforts on behalf of others. Respecting your workers boosts staff retention, their focus on attaining their goals, and employee engagement. She recommends that being respectful towards your coworkers needs you to do simply tiny things such as displaying thanks, listening carefully, giving credit, humbly communicating, thanking others, and smiling. She continues the topic by noting that we are more productive, helpful, and most importantly, it greatly aids in improving the mental health of employees when we work in a respectful workplace.

Establishing a healthy working environment begins with developing a positive employee culture, as employees are the ones who contribute the most to the company’s success. As a result, being respectful towards your coworkers is critical, as Christine Porath, a leadership expert, discusses in this episode on TED Business on Apple Podcasts.
