The MIT Professional Education Technology Leadership Program (TLP) is a multi-modular program delivered by MIT Faculty on campus and live virtually and geared towards the development needs of the next generation of Technology CEOs, CTO’s, CIO’s and Emerging Leaders. Global technology leaders and practitioners learn to lead transformational growth by developing an understanding of exponential and digital technologies and innovations, and the methods and mechanisms to apply best practices within their organizations, sectors, and industries.

The role of technology has shifted from being an enabler to a driver of business model, growth and competitive advantage. Organizations across all industries are rapidly adopting digital technologies to stay ahead. Traditional business models and processes are being redefined by the application of transformational technologies in managing or driving disruption. Exponential technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud, quantum computing, additive and digital manufacturing, blockchain, cybersecurity, and others are changing the constraints on business growth for organizations. This is creating a new set of opportunities for global leaders.

Leaders need to develop the required capabilities to navigate these fast-emerging opportunities, business models, strategic choices and uncertainty with innovation and exponential technologies. The next generation of global leaders must know how to lead their organizations in understanding, embracing and deploying the appropriate innovations at scale for their organizations to survive and thrive. David Niño, Ph.D., is a Senior Lecturer in the Bernard M. Gordon-MIT Engineering Leadership Program, where he teaches leadership for graduate engineering students. He is strongly committed to the development of leadership among engineers and other professionals in technology. He is a founding officer of the Engineering Leadership Development Division of the American Society of Engineering Education and is active in national efforts to advance the academic field of engineering leadership.

Prior to MIT, Dr. Niño was a faculty member in the schools of engineering and business at Rice University in Houston, Texas. He was director of Rice’s university-wide program in leadership development and later played a leading role in designing and establishing the university’s first four-year academic certificate in engineering leadership. He also organized a premier international conference on engineering leadership, which garnered participation from the President of the National Academy of Engineering, 28 universities, and leading engineering companies such as Boeing, NASA, and Shell.

CURRICULUM

Today, traditional business models are being transformed, disrupted or replaced by the spread of exponential technologies and their application in all sectors, be it manufacturing, engineering, retail, hospitality, travel, healthcare, or finance.

The multi-modular format of TLP is designed to strengthen four key areas required for a highly regarded technology leader to be successful in a rapidly changing and growing organization. The program will enable them to lead the change at their organizations to drive growth, evolve business models, craft strategies to counter disruptive threats and build innovative solutions leveraging exponential digital technologies.

The curriculum brings together an exploration of the potential of the leading-edge technologies; latest research and insights from leading MIT Faculty; Strategy frameworks and best practices for implementation; and immersion into the highly regarded MIT ecosystem.

TLP is a blend of on-campus learning, live virtual interactions with faculty and action learning team projects that require application of your learnings to solve a real problem that you are facing at work. The on-campus modules include immersive sessions at MIT’s campus in Cambridge, where the focus will be on the current landscape of exponential technologies, best practices, leadership frameworks and strategic real-world application of digital technologies to business models. You will experience the MIT innovation ecosystem in Cambridge and across the world and a thorough exploration of key technologies such as Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and other emerging exponential technologies.

The learning will continue during the live virtual modules where you will continue to interact with MIT faculty to learn more about several other key areas such as Cybersecurity, Blockchain, and Big Data, etc. The blended program design provides you with the opportunity to apply the learnings at your workplace, ensuring that you leverage the program for driving outcomes at work to accelerate your professional growth as you continue to learn.

ACTION LEARNING TEAM PROJECTS

The program embodies the MIT motto of “Mens et Manus” – Mind and Hand – the belief that academic knowledge must go hand in hand with practical application, and a very strong commitment to applied learning. You will work on strategy projects to apply the learning on an on-going basis throughout the program. It is a unique opportunity for collaborative learning and applying the knowledge of technologies, frameworks and best practices to real-world problems. This experience is designed to help you push the boundaries of personal and professional growth, develop a global perspective and to enable you to design strategic solutions that benefit from application of key exponential technologies.

Interview

All shortlisted candidates will go through a round of interviews before they are accepted into the program. These interviews may be conducted in person or over the telephone.

PROGRAM FEE

The Program fee for TLP is inclusive of all taxes. It covers teaching fee, all academic materials, lunches and select dinners during on-campus modules. The fee does not include transport expenses (domestic and international), any associated visa fee etc. and accommodation for modules. It also does not cover any other expenses that are not expressly mentioned above.

    What is the MIT Professional Education Technology Leadership Program (TLP)?

    The MIT Professional Education Technology Leadership Program (TLP) is an intensive, multi-modular program designed to prepare you to leverage important exponential technologies such as machine learning, IOT, AI, data analytics, blockchain, etc. to lead transformational growth for your organization and your career. TLP was developed by MIT Professional Education in conjunction with the MIT faculty who teach the courses. The program delivers key insights into the latest research, real-world applications, frameworks, and best practices, in a number of fields.

    How is this program different from other technology related programs?

    Technology Leadership Program is specifically designed for senior-level practitioners in technology and engineering who make key decisions related to the selection, design, creation, and application of the latest technologies to real-world challenges and opportunities. All courses are taught by MIT faculty and focus on leading edge technologies that are shaping the future. TLP Participants will take part in action learning team projects that tie together the key learnings from the program with a focus on real-world application.

    What is the mode of delivery?

    The Technology Leadership Program is a multi-modular blend of on-campus learning, webinars with MIT faculty, and action learning team projects. During the live virtual modules, participants interact with MIT faculty through live virtual sessions, and deepen their knowledge and skills related to breakthrough technologies, important technology-related issues and leadership frameworks and challenges.

    Are there minimum requirements for TLP?

    The program is open to applicants who meet the following basic criteria:

    • A minimum of six years of work experience in functional, technical, or business roles
    • Fluency in written and spoken English is required
    • A graduate degree with a strong academic track record is suggested, but not required

    What is the selection process for this program?

    Applications are evaluated as they are received. This process is designed to ensure the program fits the needs of the applicant, and to help in assessing if the applicant can meet the demands of the program. The online application requires applicants to provide details about themselves, their career progression, and their goals. Shortlisted candidates will be required to go through a round of interviews conducted either in-person or over the telephone. Candidates will also be required to provide two professional references who may be consulted before acceptance into the program.

    What do I receive upon the completion of the program?

    Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Technology Leadership Program Certificate from MIT Professional Education. They join a cohort of dynamic, innovative, and accomplished leaders. Participants also become part of the global MIT Professional Education network, and will be considered alumni of TLP as well as of MIT Professional Education.
