The Worker-Boss Relationship Might Get in the Way of Productivity

UCLA Anderson’s Jennifer Whitson and her colleagues study the nuanced area of how workers’ personal feelings towards their bosses greatly affect how they share information with them. The worker-boss relationship might be getting in the way of productivity.

In new research, UCLA Anderson’s Jennifer Whitson, University of Virginia’s Jieun Pai, Ohio State University’s Junha Kim and KAIST’s Sujin Lee applied attachment theory to how ground level workers could speak up and help streamline processes and procedures in order to make work more efficient. They found that extremely personal feelings were, in fact, the cause for the hindrance. How workers feel about their bosses and the worker-boss relationship can affect their inclination to share their ideas and suggestions.
