Why Working From Home is Beneficial to Your Business

Since the pandemic hit the world, workplaces have been reorganized, and working from home has become the new normal. It has proven to be one of the most effective working methods. Working from home allows employees to stay in their familiar surroundings while still producing results. Workers can now collaborate across cities, countries, and even multiple time zones as the popularity of remote working grows. Working from home has undoubtedly had a negative impact on employees’ social lives, but it has also benefited organizations to a much greater extent, as Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of WordPress and CEO of Automattic, discusses in this TED video.

The video begins with Matt discussing how his company’s employees work from a variety of locations, with the majority of them functioning as virtual nomads with no fixed location to call home for an extended period of time, as is the case for many other businesses. Organizations are made up of people from all over the world who work together to ensure that projects are completed successfully. Matt, on the other hand, prefers the term “distributed” to “remote,” since according to him, remote implies that the team as a whole is divided, with some people being more important than others. That is one of the most important things for leaders to consider. Every single person, whether they are working from home or in the office, should be treated equally and given the same amount and quality of opportunities and benefits. The distributive workforce, in Matt’s opinion, is the most efficient way to grow a business. It all boils down to you having to approach the concept with awareness. In Matt’s experience, talent and intelligence are distributed equally throughout the world. This is not the case, however, with opportunities. It is critical to include people from all over the world because it is not only easier for people to give their best when they can work from wherever they are, but it also allows for a better and more diverse understanding of the culture. Matt believes that the desire to give people autonomy over how they do their work is at the root of the decision to go distributed. Working from home allows employees to create their own schedule according to their preferences; everyone can have an office of their choice, in their preferred location; they can choose whether to include music or silence, the temperature of the room; and they can use the time saved on other important tasks. These are just a few examples of how working from home benefits not only businesses but individuals as well. Matt believes that a distributed workforce is extremely beneficial to a technology firm. Documenting everything, communicating more frequently, finding the right tools, scheduling productive face-to-face time, and assisting people in creating their ideal workspace are all important steps to ensure that employees enjoy working from home.

Working from home is undoubtedly here to stay, not only because it gives the employees the benefit to work from their own choice of location but it benefits the organizations equally by reducing the business operating costs. However, there are still aspects on which leaders need to work on, as discussed in this YouTube video on TED by Matt Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of WordPress and CEO of Automattic.
