6 Ways to Work with Generation Z

Very recently, Generation Z has begun to populate the workforce. This means that there are 4 generations working together. This also means vastly differing ideas of ‘work’. Not to mention, working styles, work ethics, expectations from work, and more.

Along with millennials, Gen Z will soon make up a majority of the workforce. To make this process and transition work, understanding how to work with the Gen Z population is of utmost importance, since they are the only generation that has never seen a world without the internet. They are true ‘digital natives’ and see the world very differently since they have always experienced it very differently.

They have strong preferences, and most certainly in the places they would like to work at.

Their entrance into the workforce will drastically change how things are done. Corporates and senior management need to be prepared with evolved and innovative ways to engage Gen Zers and more importantly, retain them.

6 Ways to Work with Generation Z

1) Do away with corporate hierarchy

Gen Zers prefer a lateral work structure. They do not do well in a typical corporate structure. They’re more accustomed to a more casual structure where everyone is equally accessible rather than a top-down management structure.

2) Encourage self-learning and flexible work hours

Contrary to popular belief, Gen Zers actually do want to work. And work hard. Many also expect to be working more than 40 hours a week and prefer a fast-paced work environment. They have evolved to be very resourceful online since the information they have been consuming has always been available online. And while the flexible work hours and maximum use of the digital medium go hand in hand, Gen Zers prefer autonomy when it comes to when they should work or learn.

3) Brush up on widely used digital platforms and technology

Considering Gen Z operate their whole life on various digital mediums and devices, it is a good idea to be up to date with the technology and apps that are doing the rounds and incorporate some in the office. They also expect workspaces to be hassle-free, efficient, and accessible. Any outdated technology or process will not go down well with them.

4) Set up a collaborative work environment

Despite the amount of time spent on digital mediums and technology, the Gen Z population craves a collaborative work environment. Instilling group activities and forums for discussions and feedback and a culture that creates team building is a great way to engage Gen Zers and also appeal to their needs.

5) Amp up your visuals

Because of the way the Gen Z population consumes content, they have evolved to be a very visual generation. They need and grasp visual messages far better than any other medium. Get innovative and make your information available to them in visually stimulating short video or mixed media formats. The more visuals, the better.

6) Give them what they value

We’ve already established that Gen Zers are ready to put in the work. And along with that comes the need to be well compensated. While they are driven by passion, they are also driven by monetary rewards and career advancements. One of the reasons is quite practical – payments of student loans. It’s no secret that while living, tuition, etc have risen in prices, compensation for work has not. Especially for the younger population. So, a fair understanding of this aspect will bode well with Gen Zers.

Incorporating these aspects in your company will allow Generation Z to feel like they belong and will help reduce employee turnover and improve their involvement and dedication within the company.
